Remote IT Support vs On-Site Support: Which Do You Really Need?

Remote IT Support vs On-Site Support: Which Do You Really Need?

When something goes wrong with your computer or IT setup, the first question many people ask is:

“Do you need to come out and see this?”

It’s a very reasonable question, and the honest answer is often, no.  Most problems can be resolved by our Remote IT support service.

At Geeks on Wheels, the majority of issues we help clients with are resolved remotely, without anyone needing to visit in person. But there are times when on-site support is the right option.

This guide explains the difference, when each makes sense, and how to know what you actually need, without jargon or pressure.

What is remote IT support?

Remote IT support means we securely connect to your computer with your permission to diagnose and fix problems in real time proving you have a stable internet connection.

To keep things safe and transparent:

  • You remain in control the whole time
  • You can see what we’re doing (and stop the session at any point)
  • We only connect after you’ve booked a session via our website.
  • You contact us directly at the time of your appointment, so you know you’ve reached the right people.
  • We never access your computer without your knowledge, permission, and a scheduled session that you initiate personally.

Why is Remote IT support safe with Geeks on Wheels?

  • You always initiate the session personally
  • You always remain in control
  • You can see what we’re doing on your screen
  • You can end the session whenever you like

We never access your computer without your knowledge, permission, and a scheduled session that you initiate.

What can usually be fixed remotely?

You might be surprised how much can be handled without a visit. Common examples include:

  • Slow or unresponsive computers
  • General Health check
  • Virus removal
  • Software issues and error messages
  • Email problems
  • Microsoft 365 setup and security
  • Printer issues
  • Password resets and account access
  • Security concerns and suspicious emails
  • System checks and updates

In many cases, remote support is faster than waiting for someone to arrive, and just as effective and extremely efficient.

When on-site IT support is needed

Remote support isn’t right for everything, and we’ll always be honest about that.

On-site support makes sense when:

  • Hardware needs replacing or installing
  • There are network or Wi-Fi cabling issues
  • A device won’t power on at all
  • Multiple devices need hands-on setup
  • A physical inspection is required
  • Client would prefer in-person face to face communication

In these situations, being there in person is simply more practical.

Is remote support “second best”?

This is a very common concern, especially for people who haven’t used it before.

The short answer: no.

Remote IT support isn’t a shortcut or a cheaper workaround. It’s now the standard way professional IT support is delivered, because it allows problems to be resolved:

  • More quickly
  • With less disruption
  • Without unnecessary travel
  • Immediate assistance in the case of an emergency

If something genuinely needs an on-site visit, we’ll say so,  but we won’t send someone out if it doesn’t add value.

How do we decide which one you need?

You don’t have to figure this out yourself.

When you contact us, we’ll:

  • Listen to what’s happening
  • Ask a few simple questions
  • Decide whether remote support is suitable
  • If a visit is required, we’ll explain why, clearly and upfront.

There’s no expectation that you “choose the right option” before getting in touch.

What most clients end up using

In practice, many of our clients use a mix of both:

  • Remote support for: day-to-day issues, mainly software issues.
  • On-site visits for:  Printer and PC setup, Wi-Fi issues, hardware, installations, Network / router configurations or larger jobs.

That flexibility is usually the most cost-effective and least stressful approach.

A final word of reassurance

If you’re unsure whether something can be fixed remotely, that’s completely normal.

You don’t need to:

  • Know technical terms
  • Diagnose the issue yourself
  • Decide upfront how support should be delivered

Our job is to guide you to the simplest, most effective solution, not to complicate things.

If you’d like reassurance, you can also see how other clients have found our service in our Google reviews https://bit.ly/4jNXkTK.

If you’d like to talk through an issue or book support, we’re always happy to help.
